Ashington seconds disappoint with the bat in defeat to Tynedale

After a an opening day win at Alnmouth last week, Ashington second-string could not repeat the same outcome against a strong Tynedale at Langwell Crescent on Saturday afternoon.

Winning the toss and bowling first, Ashington only managed seven deliveries before the hailstone and snow arrived to halt play.

When the game resumed, Tynedale were pegged back by Ashington’s bowling in the middle overs, but sloppy fielding towards the end combined with some positive batting got the visitors to 161-6. Michael Thewlis had figures of 3-22 off nine overs.

In reply, Ashington never got going with the bat, partly down to the accurate bowling of experienced first-teamer David Newton for Tynedale, who claimed figures of 3-19.

The only positive for Ashington with the bat came from brothers Matthew and George Collins, putting a tenth-wicket stand of 31 at the end, the former making an unbeaten 28.

Next week Ashington seconds are away to newly-promoted Ryton.
