Ashington Cricket Club second XI began the season with a victory on Saturday – whilst the Colliers first team were without a game following Chopwell’s withdrawal from the A2 division.
Adam Nichol and Scott Dunn both scored half centuries as the home side posted 206-7 against Consett seconds.
Sonu Singh, making his first appearance for the club, also chipped in with 26, and James Lovat made 21.
Alex Storey, another debutant for the home side, took 4-25 from five overs and Matty Collins 3-6 as the Steelmen were dismissed for 130.
Youngster Matty Potts also contributed by taking two wickets.
Langwell Crescent chairman and second XI skipper Martin Thewlis said: “It was a good start for us.
“You cannot ask for anything more than a maximum points victory on the opening day of the campaign.”
Meanwhile Thewlis said of the withdrawal of Chopwell from the A2 division: “We planned to field two teams on Saturday.
“But after a league meeting in midweek, it was confirmed that Chopwell could not turn out a side so all of their first team games have been voided.”
Thewlis welcomed the return to the fold of spinner Chris Watson.
“Chris played his first game for the seconds on Saturday after being out for a year and a half with a knee injury,” he said.
“It was good to have him back and he bowled nicely.”
Junior registration will be held at the club on Saturday, April 27, from 10am to 11am.
“This is for kids who have an interest in coming along to our Saturday morning coaching lessons,” said Thewlis.
“The lessons begin the following week (Saturday, May 4) between 10am and 11.30am with qualified coaches who have been CRB checked.”
This weekend, Ashington firsts are at home to Cowgate (1.30pm start) whilst the seconds are away to Swalwell.
