Ashington seconds’ lead at the top of the B1 table was shaved to 39 points after defeat to second-placed Ponteland at Ponteland Sports Centre on Saturday.
After winning the toss and deciding to bowl first, Ashington did well despite being short on bowlers as they restricted the hosts to 129 all out from 45 overs.
Matthew Potts finished with 5-32 whilst Andrew Morgan made 43 with the bat.
In response, Ashington got off to a nightmare start, losing Doug Potts and Jack McCarthy in the first over to Andrew Parker’s bowling, and the champions struggled to recover, eventually being bowled out for 71 just 32.3 overs later.
Only Matthew Potts and Dale Ross made double figures.
Ashington look to bounce back next week when they play host to Newcastle City.
