Ashington’s third XI capped off a memorable season by lifting the Ian Appleby Cup with an exciting win over Benwell Hill at Langwell Crescent on Sunday.
As a result, the Colliers, chasing down 125, completed a league and cup double.
But they left it late and clinched victory with a ball to spare after an inspirational and whirlwind unbeaten knock of 38 from Jonathan Storey.
Wright (24) and Darshana (23) had top scored for the Hill as they posted 125-6 from their 20 overs whilst Trevor Christie took 3-35.
Ashington made a good start and after being 52-1 at the half way mark were indebted to good knocks from Scott Dunn (29), James Harmison (18) and Matty Storey (16).
However, the visitors applied the brake to such an extent that Ashington required 48 from their last four overs.
Skipper Josh Robinson chipped in with 15 but it was Storey who took the plaudits and the limelight as he smashed three boundaries and two sixes from only 13 deliveries, securing the win with a full blooded off drive.
