Bedlington 88 all out
(Consett won by 6 wickets)
Go North East Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League, Division A1
With the early cancellation of Bedlington’s second team fixture at home to Whickham, the first XI were the only team in action with an away game at Consett.
Early morning rain led to a delayed start and with the wicket being covered until just before the start the wicket was likely to offer the bowlers early assistance.
The unavailability of opening bowlers Craig Robinson and Chris Younger along with young wicketkeeper Joe Carrick meant a reshuffle of the team.
Derek Shepherd, Sam Taylor and Chris Taylor stepped up from the second team to cover.
Skipper Sean McCafferty lost the toss and unsurprisingly Bedlington were invited to bat first by the hosts.
Darren Leason and Michael Levison opened the batting and made steady progress taking the score to 22 before Leason fell for 14 caught behind off the bowling of Cox.
Both Levison and McCafferty fell with the score on 27 leaving the visitors struggling.
Despite most batsmen playing some nice shots, only Kevin Harnett with 11 and Lewis Tanney with a battling 17 not out provided any real resistance.
Byes were joint third top scorer with 11 and a score of 88 all out in the 33rd over was never likely to be enough.
This proved to be the case as the hosts, although never dominating, reached their total with only four wickets down in the 30th over.
Sam Taylor took an early wicket and Lewis Tanney bowled tightly, however the spinners were the stand-out bowlers.
The experienced Nicky Douglas bowled without luck to record figures of 0-15 off nine overs and young Josh Watson was the bright spot on an otherwise dismal day with 3-36 off his eight overs.
Bedlington collected only two points and the defeat highlighted the absolute necessity to turn out the strongest team possible week after week.
Next Saturday sees the first XI host Leadgate still searching for their first victory. The seconds are away to Lintz.
Consett 20 points; Bedlington 2 points
