Blyth bowlers earn the win for seconds

BLYTH seconds won a low scoring game against Monkseaton thirds on Saturday.

On a wet wicket Blyth lost the coin toss and were put in.

Blyth struggled on the unpredictable wicket and in the 12th over they were 14-3.

This brought veteran Gill to the crease, but another wicket went down with the score on 18.

O’Connor joined Gill and the pair added 29 before a mix up saw O’Connor run out for 12.

Gill, still playing a dogged innings, was running out of partners. He finally departed for 27 with the score on 62.

This left skipper Colin Blackett and his son Ben who added another nine before the innings was brought to a close for 71.

Monkseaton’s bowling figures were H Green 0-10, D McDougal 2-10, B Cliffe 2-22, T Baptist 1-13, R Anderson 3-8 and D Turnbull 1- 9.

Monkseaton got off to steady start but Thompson gave them nothing to hit.

However, O’Connor was a bit more unlucky with N Green trying to hit anything off line.

Blyth made a bowling change and brought Gill on to replace O’Connor for the tenth over.

This enabled Blyth to get a firm grip on the game with neither bowler giving anything away.

Thompson got the break through Blyth needed with the score on 22.

With Gill and Thompson in tandem, the runs dried up and seven overs later with three runs added Thompson struck again.

Blyth had some fortune when they got a third wicket on the same score with a run out.

Thompson came off after his ten overs with figures of 2-4 off ten overs.

Young Bradley Purvis came on and he bowled well with experience beyond his tender young age.

Gill was still toiling away with no luck from the other end, beating the bat on several occasions.

Gill came off after his ten overs, conceding only nine runs. Carrigan came on and got the breakthrough. Rowell replaced Purvis who bowled five overs for just seven runs.

This pair cleaned up with the aid of another two run outs as Monkseaton were all out for 58.

Blyth’s bowling figures were K Thompson 2-4, R O’Connor 0-17, A Gill 0-9, B Purvis 0-7, F Carrigan 3-10 and A Rowell 2-11.
