Ashington Cricket Club first XI captain Greg Williams was delighted as his side beat the rain clouds before completing a season’s double over Newcastle City at Langwell Crescent.

The result saw the Colliers remain on top of the A1 Division of the Go North East Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, 46 points ahead of second placed defending champions Shotley Bridge.

However, Williams described his side’s next two games, away to Consett and Leadgate, as major games.

He said: “In my opinion the next two weeks are especially massive and we will be completely focused as if we are playing a top team.

“Consett have been a bit of a bogy side for us over the years and Leadgate, on their home patch, is also a tricky fixture.

“We face Shotley Bridge and Swalwell after that in what is a mouth-watering prospect.”

Williams was ‘pleased’ to lose the toss on Saturday, adding: “With the way the weather was, it probably was a good one to lose.

“They decided to have a bat, and to be honest when the weather is iffy, I think it is an advantage to bowl first, so I thought things worked out quite well for us.

“We got off to a good start and were tight all the way through. Newcastle City never got away from us and Callum [Storey], Ben [Harmison], Paul [Rutherford] and Ani [Singh] all bowled really well before the seamers came back to finish them off at the end.

“It could have been a tough game because they have got some players who can take the game away from you, and with ten overs to go, they were still only three wickets down.

“If they had teed off, things could have proved awkward, so it was a good effort to keep them down to 135.”

Williams said his side had provided a perfect batting response.

“If you lose a couple of wickets in a low scoring game you never know what will happen,” he added.

“Neil Wood and Ani Singh got us off to a flyer then Jack Jessop and Ben O’Brien batted really well in the middle to just about finish it off for us. It was a perfect batting response, to be honest.”
