Bomarsund Cricket Club first and second team were defeated at the hands of Tillside and Whitley Bay respectively at the weekend.

The firsts were put in to bat after losing the toss and managed to make 249-5 from their 50 overs, with Colin Thornton (55) the only man to reach a half century.

Stephen Thain (44), Sam Thornton (47) and Jonathan Scope (49) all managed to get in, but departed short of their milestones.

In reply, Tillside managed to knock the runs off inside 42 overs, with Jack Bagness top-scoring, but falling one run short of his century when Liam Besford clean bowled the opener.

Besford finished with figures of 2-72, Gary Mordey bowled ten overs and ended with figures of 2-51, while Chris Mollon picked up one wicket for 42 runs.

The defeat leaves the first team tenth in the Northumberland League Premier League having lost their opening three games of the season, picking up 15 points.

The seconds were at Bomarsund Welfare and were also put into bat after Whitley Bay won the toss.

They managed 204-6 from their 40 overs, a total that they would have been happy with.

Gary Bell top scored for the side with his knock of 82 and opener Adam McTaggart fell two runs short of his half century as he was caught and bowled.

In reply, Whitley Bay did not have it all their own way, having hit the winning runs with one ball spare, their number three Graham Ord ended not out on 71, with opener John Douglas (59) giving good support.

David Seccombe took both wickets of Bay’s openers and finished with figures of 2-41 from his ten overs, and McTaggart ended with figures of 2-21.

The defeat is the second team’s first of the season, having won one and the other cancelled, leaving them third in the Northumberland Cricket League division two on 42 points.
