For the second season running, Ashington CC 2nd XI claimed the Division B1 title with a 114 run win over already-relegated Whickham on Saturday.
Losing the toss and being inserted, Ashington made full use of the 45 overs, eventually posting 266-5 thanks to a career-best 81 from Matthew Potts, 54 from captain Doug Potts and 48 from vice-captain Josh Robinson.
In reply, Whickham’s run chase never really got going despite Ashington not being at their best with the ball and they were eventually all out in the 43rd over for 153.
There were four wickets for Matthew Potts and Matthew Collins that contributed to sealing first place with one game to go, at Lintz.
Skipper Doug Potts said: “Everyone has played their part. We have been really consistent with the bat but our bowling has been excellent and I think we have made it really tough for opposing batsmen to score with bowling a disciplined line and length.
“Adding to that some great fielding and a togetherness in the whole club to encourage success, and we’ve had a really enjoyable season with some great performances from our young cricketers.
The skipper will be stepping down from his role next season.
