Thornton guides Bomarsund to win in season opener

Colin Thornton top scored for Bomarsund first team in their run chase as they made a successful start to the new season with a three-wicket win over Berwick.

Bhavesh Soni led the Berwick innings with a knock of 82 before Liam Besford removed the number three, but the hosts could only manage to make 188-9 from 48.1 overs.

Thornton (77 not out) and Adam McTaggart (59) both made half centuries to guide the visitors to their target with a ball to spare.

Fourteen-year-old Adam Gardner took his maiden first team wicket, removing opener Mark Woodock for one, but skipper Jordan Woodcock and Soni produced 118 runs between them to restore the Berwick innings.

David Seccombe then bowled Jordan Woodcock for 36 and keeper Richard Davison was soon back in the pavilion when Gary Mordey bowled him for nought.

Soni fell to Besford, who finished with two wickets, and Dan Robinson picked up a valuable three wickets as he finished with 3-18 from his five overs.

Bomar knew a decisive partnership would put them in a good position to seal the first win of the season.

Captain Thornton and McTaggart were the pair to produce that stand, as they made 136 runs between them to lead the visitors from the front.

John Simmons removed the latter after he passed his half century mark, but after Stephen Thain (22), Bomarsund lost five wickets before Thornton guided them over the line.

Mark Woodcock removed Adam Purvis (7), Gary Bell (0) and Andrew Matthews (7), and Besford and Robinson were both ran out, but it proved to be indecisive as Bomar claimed a crucial win on the opening day of the season.
