Unbeaten Ashington still on course for cricket league win
Ashington Rugby 1sts maintained their unbeaten start to the season when they recorded a six wicket away win over Corbridge 1sts in Division 3 of the Northumberland & Tynside Cricket League at the weekend.
On a day when the majority of fixtures were cancelled due to weather, the game was one of the few to beat the elements and Ashington’s victory, making it ten wins out of ten with one game cancelled, means they stay top of the table.
They have 302 points, putting them 33 ahead of second placed Berwick, with both sides looking well on course for promotion.
Saturday’s game was a low scoring affair. Corbridge were put into bat and they found runs difficult to come by, being restricted to 85-9 in their 40 overs with Andy percival their top scorer on 20. Corey Milburn (3-18) and Mark lawrence (3-28) were the main wicket-takers.
In reply, Ashington needed 33 overs to chase it down at 86-4with Chris Harwood making 46.
Ashington Rugby 2nds, who have lost only one game, currently sit top of Division 5 North on 230 points, ten ahead of local rivals Morpeth 2nds.
In Division 6 North, the only game to beat the weather on Saturday was the Blyth 2nds v Ulgham 2nds fixture.
Blyth won by seven wickets, posting 149-3 after Ulgham had opened with 148 all out.
Mark Prime was top scorer for Ulgham on 42, Mark Graham taking 4-22 for the home side.
In reply, Gary Cotterill hit 62, Ben Blackett 36 and Mirza Ahmed 33 as Blyth chased it down in 22 overs.
