Annual football match helps bring in over £10,000 for charity

Organisers behind a drive to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association in memory of Les Alderson, a respected figure at Ashington Football Club, have broken through the £10,000 barrier.

An annual football match, which began three years ago between an Ashington XI and a Bedlington side from 1999, compete for the Les Alderson Memorial Cup.

Organiser Nicola Shotton said: “I would like say a big thank you to everyone who supported the Les Alderson Celebration Day.

“So far over the previous two events, we had raised £8,000 and our hopes were to take it to the £10,000 this year.

“At the moment the total is now £10,600 and I am delighted once again with the outcome.

“A massive thank you to Ashington Football Club for allowing us to host the event and to all those who took part in the day including the volunteers, players and all who came along to support.”

The event will be held again next year and for more information see

Meanwhile Nicola will be in a team of LA legends along with Les Alderson junior, Ian Skinner, Lee Anderson, Jonathon Fitton, Mark Fitton, Andrew Rowell, Keira Bell and Kris Lavery who are taking part in the Gung-Ho challenge at Newcastle Racecourse on Saturday, September 19, where they will be tackling the inflatable obstacles on a 5k course.

“What we raise will be added to our total for the MNDA,” added Nicola.
