Ashington CFC U14s compete in international tournament
Ashington CFC U14s competed in an international football tournament in Germany.
They were invited by SG Hackenberg to take part in their annual Pentacost Football Tournament. The team are based in Remscheid, which is twinned with Ashington.
The tournament saw teams from Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Turkey, India and England compete.
Team manager Gary Bell said: “It was a fantastic experience for the lads to play in a foreign country against teams from across the world.
“We had a great time and the football on show was of a very high standard.”
Ashington CFC had a mixed bag of results with two wins, two draws and two defeats across the day.
“While we wanted to give a good show, the main thing was about the lads enjoying the experience,” added Bell.
“We have had a very good season domestically and this was a reward for the boys for all of their hard work.
“They loved meeting footballers from the various other teams and there was a really good atmosphere all the day.
“In the last game we went to penalties and in true English style lost the shoot-out to our friends from Mumbia in India.
“Our hosts were very welcoming and we were delighted to receive a friendship trophy from them at the end of our stay.
“The trip cost a lot of money to pull together and we were extremely grateful to receive donations from Ashington Town Council and local charity Ashington Leisure Partnership to help us meet these costs.”
The trip marked the end of Ashington CFC’s season and they are now enjoying a much deserved short rest before it is back to preparations for next season when trials begin on June 3 and 4.
