THE new goal nets at Woodhorn Lane had been given a good testing on Wednesday as Ashington ran out 8-2 victors against West Allotment Celtic.
But sadly, neither the Colliers nor their opponents Whitley Bay ‘A’ could find a way through on Friday in their pre-season affair.
There were few chances in the opening half yet as early as the third minute, a scramble ensued on the Whitley goal line following a free kick by Tommy English which eventually led to a 25-yard effort from former Seahorses servant Andy Dugdale being taken by keeper Michael Hammond.
Liam Davison produced Whitley’s first effort in the sixth minute which was held by keeper Karl Dryden.
Then Gareth Bainbridge was only inches off target when his curling free kick from just outside the box went the wrong side of the upright.
Midway through the half, Gavin Hatrick escaped the offside trap and he pulled the ball back to Chris Walpole, but his shot was collected by Dryden.
Michael McMullen went close then just before the interval home skipper Liam Atkin headed over from an English corner on the left.
The visitors, who included first teamers, Craig McFarlane, Brian Smith and Chris Fawcett, ought to have broke the deadlock within a 45 seconds of the resumption when McMullen was clean through but fired wide.
Ashington responded with efforts from Buzzeo, Bainbridge and Phill Bell before a low centre by substitute Kyle Downey went across the face of goal.
Craig Scott burst into the box but fired into the side-netting then Ashington pieced together their best move of the match.
It involved Buzzeo, Louis Storey and James Taylor with the latter supplying a cross into the box where Bainbridge’s header was blocked by Chris Bainbridge.
Ashington’s Bainbridge curled a right footer inches wide then with time running out and Dan Chambers fired over for Bay.
Ashington: Dryden, Williams, Scott, Taylor, Atkin, Dugdale (Grieve ten mins), Storey, English (Bond 77 mins), Bell, Bainbridge, Buzzeo. Sub not used: Barnard.
In the midweek clash with West Allotment Celtic, Gareth Bainbridge rifled a hat-trick with other strikes coming from Phill Bell, Liam Atkin, Paul Buzzeo, Matty Grieve and Louis Storey as the Wansbeck side racked up eight for the second consecutive match.
Jed Finlay with a penalty and Lewis Atkinson were on target for the visitors.
Ashington were scheduled to travel to meet North Shields on Wednesday, August 1 (7.30pm kick-off), then wind up their pre-season programme with a home clash against Gateshead Reserves on Saturday (3pm).
