After putting pen to paper last week, the 24-year-old said: “It’s brilliant. Obviously Ashington is my home town club and I am happy to sign.

“I’ve always wanted to have the opportunity with the Colliers and now I have, and it’s time to move forward with it.

“I was with Guisborough last season but started this term with Ebac Northern League second division side Sunderland Ryhope Colliery Welfare.

“When the seven days notice of approach came in from Ashington, it was a no brainer.”

Manager Steve Harmison said: “Damien is someone who we spoke to in the summer.

“We couldn’t guarantee him a first team place but we always had that eye on him, and when Dylan Williamson got injured we thought Damien was a like for like replacement.

“Although it is harsh on Sunderland Ryhope Colliery Welfare because they are fighting on three or four fronts, obviously I’m looking after number one and you have got to try and get the best you possibly can.”

The new singing went straight into the side for Saturday’s defeat at West Auckland.

“Damien did well in the first half and he is going to be a good addition,” said Harmison.

Meanwhile midfielder Ollie Hotchkiss has moved in the opposite direction.

Harmison said: “Ollie couldn’t play midweek games through his work and it’s a difficult situation.

“Josh Gray is already doing that and we couldn’t have another one in our ranks, and because Ollie wasn’t getting a game, we decided it was no good for either party.

“Ollie needs to play because the quality he has got is undoubted.

“He’s a fantastic lad, he’s a talented footballer when he is on the ball and he goes with our best wishes.”
