Ashington turned on the style to blow away a youthful Hartlepool United side in their pre-season friendly at Woodhorn Lane on Monday night.

Kyle Oliver notched a first half brace before three strikes in the final quarter saw the Colliers run out 5-0 winners.

The early exchanges produced plenty of action with Andrew Johnson and Jonathyn Quinn both denied by visiting keeper Peter Denton, while a dangerous low cross from Dylan Armstrong.

At the other end, home stopper Conor Grant held a 20-yard drive from Jack Blackford.

But midway through the opening half the Wansbeck side went ahead with a peach of a strike by Oliver.

Johnson did the spadework down the left and when he reached the byline his cross was played back by Armstrong for Oliver who curled a delightful right footer from the edge of the area wide of Denton and inside the far upright.

On the half hour, Grant saved with his legs to foil Scott Howes then play immediately switched to the other end with Johnson once again kept at bay by Denton.

Ten minutes from the break, the Colliers doubled their advantage with a fabulously well worked goal.

Quinn and Armstrong linked superbly down the left and when the ball was pulled back, Oliver slotted home.

Jordan Jewson had a shot turned over by Grant, who also foiled Kenton Richardson before Quinn just failed to convert a centre from Ben Christensen.

Ashington were industrious in midfield and looking lively up front, and after Johnson had headed wide, the third goal arrived in the 67th minute as Armstrong, playing against his former club, converted a low cross laid on a plate from Johnson.

Three minutes later it was four as Dylan Williamson drove right footed from 16 yards across the keeper and inside the far corner.

Then on 88 minutes, a terrific move involving Adam Shanks and Armstrong saw the latter’s cross rammed home by Michael Bell to complete the scoring.
