Ashington suffered a home defeat to league leaders Redcar at the Rec on Saturday.
After good early defence, Ashington took the lead for the first time this season when Brian Merryweather took an interception in his own 22 and ran the length of the field to score under the posts for a try, which was converted by Acaster
But the visitors went on to dominate the rest of the first half as Ashington’s young backs were no match for the experienced and well drilled Redcar backs, who scored five tries, four of which were successfully converted.
Ash started the second half strongly and full-back Ryan Dodds kicked a well taken penalty to make the score 33-10.
In a scrappy second half Redcar added two further tries before Ashington enjoyed a period of sustained pressure which ended in a pushover try for Wood.
Colts Lewis Henderson and Josh Weekes had good games and Ash gave a debut to replacement forward Harry Lumley, who showed plenty of commitment and promise.
Next week Ashington are at home to Seton Carew in a game they must win.
