Damien Stevens bagged two second half goals as Ashington pulled off an eye-catching 2-1 victory over Marske United at Bedford Terrace on Thursday night.

The 24-year-old forward came through a late fitness test on an ankle injury to take his place in the side, and after having a goal chalked off in the first half, came up trumps with a timely double.

Ashington-born Stevens said: “I had missed an earlier opportunity, and in a game like this one was, you need to bury chances.

“You can’t afford to miss them, so when I scored my first goal it was relief.

“I was happy with the second where I turned and dropped my shoulder and as soon as the ball left my foot, I knew it was going in.”

He continued: “I get asked to play wide to help the team out, but I enjoy playing further forward and I’m very happy.”

Stevens will be fit for Saturday’s trip to Jarrow Roofing.

“I’ve come through 90 minutes tonight and feel fine,” he added.
