Stockport County 4Blyth Spartans 2Blyth Spartans suffered an FA Trophy First Round defeat to National League outfit Stockport County, despite a valiant display from Lee Clark’s men.
The hosts got their noses in front on the hour-mark when Tom Walker’s free-kick was headed home by Ash Palmer, who might have been in an offside position.
Spartans equalised before half-time when Rhys Evans sent a ball across the face of goal that was tapped home by Lewis Hawkins.
The Hatters regained the advantage in the 66th minute – substitute Adam Thomas heading home before Tom Walker added a third, nine minutes later.
But Spartans refused to go down without a fight. and Jack Hunter’s swiftly reduced the deficit.
Blyth then threatened a leveller until Sam Minihan, another substitute, secured the win for Stockport in the fourth minute of injury time.
Meanwhile, Spartans have added to their squad with the arrival of Kris Thackray from Morpeth Town.
Thackray, a defender, arrives on a short term (one month) contract and has bags of experience, playing in three overseas countries.
A former Newcastle United junior, he has also played in Italy with Serie A side Reggina and Monopoli, in Malta and Germany. Last year he also had a brief spell with Spennymoor Town.
Blyth Spartans are next in action when they take on Southport at home in a league fixture at Croft Park on Saturday (December 21) and on Boxing Day are away to Gateshead before facing Darlington at home on December 28.
