And manager Mick Connor described the result as “disappointing”.

He said: “The defeat against Team Northumbria just followed the semi-final match against Blyth Spartans which left a lump in our throat – reaching 1-1 by full-time to a team three leagues above us and then losing in extra-time.

“We literally just ran out of legs and Spartans were the stronger side, both physically and mentally.

“Even with Team Northumbria, I believe we were the better team, but the lads seemed lethargic and it was only in the last 20 minutes of the game that we looked like a team that could really do something.

“We still need to get 33 points by the end of the season to have any opportunity of reaching our goal of being eligible for promotion.

“On paper, we are very capable. We have only lost three league games in 28.

“It’s been a very unusual season as the top teams haven’t lost many games and we started the season very slowly, and now have a very different squad.

“We still have all to play for and it will be hugely disappointing if we don’t get promoted with the squad we have, but our time in this league has been a huge learning curve and I am very excited for next season.”

Town’s home game against Esh Winning on Saturday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch – a rescheduled date is yet to be confirmed.

Josh Miller is out again for the next few weeks due to a hamstring injury after only just returning to the squad following a few months out.

Malky Morien is recovering from an ankle injury but will be fit enough to take some part in the next couple of weeks.

Captain John Iveson is back in the match day squad after being out since October with a knee injury, and Gary Day has made a full recovery and is in the squad after an operation for ‘Gilmore’s Groin’.
