Another Saturday – and another postponement for Ashington FC, with a waterlogged surface the reason why their away clash at Ryhope CW was called off for a fifth time this season.
However, Woodhorn Lane manager Steve Bowey – after hastily arranging a training session and consequently putting his squad through their paces – took the opportunity to laud praise on his backroom staff – Gareth McAlindon, Gary Neasham and Joe Race – as well as football secretary Gav Perry.
“I played in the same team as Gareth (McAlindon) at Gateshead,” said Bowey, “That’s when I first met him and it was an instant connection. We are best mates and he has been my assistant for the past six years and feeds me invaluable information.”
He continued: “Gary Neasham came on board as physiotherapist when I took over the job as manager at Ashington in October. He was previously at Blyth Spartans and Gateshead and is an integral figure at the club.”
He added: “Joe Race doubles up as goalkeeping coach as well as being our logistics manager– but makes no fuss and just gets on with the two jobs. I can remember when several people helped out to make sure all the lads had the right kit but Joe does that entirely himself.”
He went on: “Gav (Perry) is Mr Football. He is very enthusiastic and extremely helpful and if you want to know something, he will get the answer. In my eyes, Gareth, Gary, Joe and Gav are unsung heroes.”
Saturday’s cancellation was the fourth in a row for the Wansbeck side. The game at Ryhope has been quickly rescheduled for Monday, April 16, and Bowey said: “Everyone gears up for a match and when it’s called off, it’s disheartening but with the amount of rain we had, I had an inkling it was going to be off and it came as no surprise. The matches will now come thick and fast but we have got a squad capable to combat that.”
Bowey’s first ever participation at a talk-in – at his former club Queen of the South last Saturday night – went well until the boss endured a grueling journey from Dumfries back to his home in Stanley.
*Weather permitting. Ashington will travel to face Jarrow Roofing on Saturday (March 24).
