BLYTH Spartans manager Steve Cuggy believes neighbours Ashington CFC have got what he describes as being an ‘FA Cup chance’ of toppling Blue Square Bet North side Guiseley in the third qualifying round tie at Woodhorn Lane.
Cuggy said: “It is a big ask but Ashington have got an FA Cup chance – and they are at home.
“Guiseley are very much a team of a good mixture and they are clinical in front of goal.
“But Ashington must be full of confidence after their replay win against Vauxhall Motors and all I would say is that they have got to take their chances when they come along.”
Cuggy’s Spartans side were on the wrong end of a 5-0 drubbing to Guiseley earlier in the season, and the Croft Park boss added: “It could have been different because we missed chances early on but once Guiseley went ahead they were sensational. They are a top side.”
As long as Spartans get a result at Whitby in their FA Cup tie, and if the Colliers do likewise, then Cuggy will text his good friend Gary Middleton a message of congratulations.
“Apart from playing in the same side as Gary at Whitley Bay, I also partnered Ashington coach Ritchie Bond up front in our days at Blyth in 1990,” he said,.
“I scored 45 goals but Ritchie keeps telling me that he set most of them up.”
