Premiership referee Michael Oliver will return to his roots when he takes charge of Ashington’s friendly match at home against a Newcastle United XI at Woodhorn Lane on Tuesday, writes Brian Bennett.
The Ashington-born official is always eager and ready to officiate at his hometown club and has confirmed his availability for the fixture, which has a 7.30pm kick-off.
Oliver was the man in the middle when the two sides met last term in a clash which the Colliers won 1-0 with a late goal by Ben Harmison.
Ashington FC’s joint manager Tom Wade said: “Everybody is looking forward to it.
“There are a lot of Newcastle United supporters up here and to meet them at any level is a boost for our squad.”
Meanwhile, the Colliers pre-season programme continued last week with back-to-back 3-0 victories against Alnwick Town and Whickham.
