First league win for Spartans

Blyth Spartans 3AFC Telford 1Blyth Spartans got their first three points of the season with a 3-1 victory over AFC Telford, and in so doing made it back-to-back wins.

Following their first win of the season, a 1-0 FA Cup victory over Curzon Ashton, Spartans had hat-trick hero Callum Roberts to thank as his three stunning solo goals were the difference for Lee Clark’s side.

Roberts opened the scoring after 10 minutes with the first shot of the game.

It was the only goal of the first half, but he got his second on 65 minutes to double Spartans’ lead.

AFC Telford cut the deficit with 15 minutes to go as Darryl Knight headed past Mark Foden.

But Roberts completed his hat-trick and secured Blyth’s first three points of the season smashing home on 87 minutes.

Meanwhile, Spartans have confirmed that Jake Orrell has left the club after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

Orrell signed for Blyth in the summer, joining from Newcastle Benfield.

He made ten appearances in 13 games in all competitions and trhe decision to release him from his contract came at the player’s request.

Manager Lee Clark said: “Jake came to see me about leaving.

“I was disappointed, but if anyone wants to play at a lower level then they have not got the ambition I want.

“I wish Jake all the best for his future career.”

On Saturday Spartans hit the road again with a trip to Hednesford in the FA Cup. The next league game is away to Curzon Ashton on October 12.
