Karen Wright fired a four-goal salvo to help Ashington to a convincing victory and double over Walbottle on Sunday at Walbottle Campus.

The visitors opened the scoring on seven minutes when Lauren Kavanagh headed firmly home from a Laura Jobson corner.

Kristie Fenwick and Wright had good chances before the latter netted to increase the lead on ten minutes.

A searing burst of pace by Danni Hooker picked out Wright who slammed home from 20 yards to make it three, and only a few minutes later Wright completed her hat-trick, running on to Jobson’s through ball and slotting past the stranded keeper.

Hooker struck the bar with a spectacular shot from 25 yards and Megan Tighe shot narrowly wide before Ashington won a free kick for handball on the edge of the area from which Laura Jobson powered a shot home into the top corner.

Sarah Taylor nipped in and slotted home the sixth just before half-time, then Ashington increased their lead when Wright lobbed the keeper on the hour mark to make it seven.

Walbottle gradually got in the game and Ashington’s stand-in keeper Jess Jenkinson made a couple of saves before Sarah Withers hammered in to pull one back.

However, Fenwick scored as she cut in from the left to fire a stinging shot past the stranded keeper to make it 8-1, then late on Withers scored again for the hosts to make the final score 8-2.
