Hanson smashes a late winner for Ashington
Ashington 2North Shields 1Substitute Jamie Hanson smashed a sensational late winner for Ashington against local rivals North Shields at Woodhorn Lane on Saturday which fired his side to only their second league victory of the season.
The teenager - who has been knocking on the door for a full debut after impressing in cameo appearances off the bench – came up trumps with seven minutes of normal time remaining, hammering home a brilliant right footed half volley from 16 yards following a free kick.
The Colliers – who trailed to a Ryan Carr opener - rode their luck during the first period and could have been out of sight but a rejuvenated home side levelled through Danny Anderson who - like Hanson - notched his first goal at senior level and based on their second half performance, the Wansbeck outfit were worthy winners.
The opening period had contained a glut of chances, none of which were taken. However in the 18th minute, the visitors stormed into the lead. Scott McCarthy had plenty of space to supply a low cross which was turned in by Carr, who didn’t have to break stride. Two minutes later, Curtis Coppen met a right wing corner by Danny Anderson but he headed down into the ground taking the pace off the ball and ‘keeper Greg Purvis gathered.
After the break there were chances at both ends, but in the 77th minute, Ashington drew level. Anderson swung over a corner from the right and when Purvis pushed out a drive from Taggart, Anderson – later named as the man of the match - was on hand to sweep the ball home.
As the Colliers looked to work another opening, Williamson was shut out before Hanson pounced to claim the winner in the 83rd minute. Following a free-kick, the ball bobbled around in the area until it ran to the youngster who struck the sweetest of half volleys which gave Purvis no chance.
Before kick-off on Saturday, players, officials and spectators joined in a minute’ s applause as a mark of respect for Newcastle Benfield chairman Jimmy Rowe who sadly passed away during the week.
On Saturday Ashington are home to Benfield.
