NEW Hartley Juniors’ successful season continued on Saturday when they entertained league champions Gateshead in what was their fourth final of the season.
Having already secured two trophies, Hartley were made to fight all the way for a third as they won the Sunderland Eye Infirmary Cup 5-4.
The week started with Hartley losing 1-0 to Ryhope in a wind swept League Cup final, but Hartley gained revenge in midweek with a 3-2 semi-final win against the same opposition to put them into the final against Gateshead.
It took 30 minutes for the deadlock to be broken and it was Jack Martin who put the South Tynesiders in front.
This lead lasted only a few minutes as Hartley then scored twice in five minutes through Danny Young and Ryan Burton.
Gateshead levelled with the last kick of the half through Josh Allen.
The second half then saw Gateshead go back in front with another from Martin before a mix-up in the Gateshead box saw Hartley level with Nial Younger on target.
Younger then got his second of the game to put Hartley 4-3 up, but with 92 minutes on the clock Greg Tait made it all square again and the game looked certain to be heading into extra time until the 94th minute saw Young’s effort fire home via the crossbar to seal an unbelivable victory for Hartley.
