Ashington FC captain Andrew Johnson spoke on Monday night of disappointment amongst the playing squad following the resignation of manager Gary Middleton earlier in the day.
Johnson said: “As a group of players we haven’t been good enough this season.
“Performances haven’t been up to scratch and consequently for one reason or another it hasn’t happened for us this year – but certainly not through the lack of trying.
“The players are disappointed to hear the news as Gary has stuck by us and ultimately we have got to take blame – it’s not all down to him. Gary took us to our highest finishes in the league as well as cup finals, including winning the Northumberland Senior Cup, and it is easy to forget where we have come from and the success he has brought to the club.”
“But this term hasn’t been good enough.”
