Ladies still chasing title

ASHINGTON Ladies extended their unbeaten League run to 26 games as they comfortably beat third placed Percy Main in sweltering conditions at Pegswood on Sunday.

League leaders Lowick also won, which leaves Ashington one point behind with a game in hand.

The home side started well and visiting keeper Emily Flood was called upon to thwart Jess Hooper.

Laura Jobson, Stacey Naples and Danni Clasper all went close as Ashington piled on the pressure but it took them until the 41st minute to break the deadlock when following a through ball from Naples, Karen Wright stroked home from the edge of the box.

Lauren Kavanagh went near at the beginning of the second half before Naples thunderous shot from 35 yards put the Angels 2-0 up in the 58th minute.

Laura Powell in the home goal – quiet for most of the game – made two superb saves to keep the lead intact, then Wright stabbed home Ashington’s third when she connected with Rebecca Caldow’s well taken corner.

In the 90th minute, Kirsty Williams headed home a consolation for the visitors.

Ashington Ladies: Powell, Bolton, Ginger, Kavanagh, Caldow, Jobson, Naples, Wright, Fenwick, Clasper, Hooper. Subs: Murphy, Latto, Tighe, Sayer.

Earlier in the week Ashington Ladies romped to a 14-0 victory over Cramlington with goals from Clasper (6), Wright (4), Naples, Caldow, Latto and Fenwick.

The Angels play their final game of the season on Thursday against Cramlington at Pegswood when they can hopefully clinch the title – provided they have got the right result from Tuesday night’s scheduled home clash against North Shields.
