Ladies top following win over local rivals

ASHINGTON Ladies FC finally got back to playing football after a nine weeks absence with a tremendous 6-1 win at Cramlington United.

The win took them to the top of the league.

After eight minutes Ashington took the lead following Lauren Kavanagh’s long throw which Kirsten McKenzie slotted home.

Amanda Gaffney added a second after a neat build up between Megan Tighe and McKenzie.

Almost immediately Fairlamb reduced the deficit.

Dani Clasper was wide before Rebecca Caldow’s cross was deflected to Tighe who placed a cracking shot in the top corner for 3-1.

Just before half-time another Kavanagh throw caused panic in the home defence and Tighe stabbed home from just inside the penalty area.

In the second half Coral Duff in the visitors goal made a couple of good saves to keep Cramlington at bay before Tighe completed her hat-trick with another well taken shot after the home defence failed to clear.

Tighe nearly added a fourth when she ran half the length of pitch but shot weakly at the keeper.

However, a few minutes later, Kavanagh’s thumping shot cannoned off the bar and Clasper stabbed home in the melee which ensued.

Ashington Ladies: Duff, Sturgeon, Kavanagh, Crombie, Hogg, Clasper, Murphy, McKenzie, Fish, Tighe, Gaffney. Subs: McDonald, Caldow.

Sunday sees a top of the table clash when Ashington travel to face Lowick for a 2pm kick-off.
