Late Fenwick strike gets Blyth Town off to winning start

Northern Alliance premier division champions Blyth Town needed a late goal to get the new season under way with a win.

Only seven minutes were left on the clock when new signing Michael Fenwick broke the deadlock to earn a 1-0 home win over Whickham Sports.

With a strong pre-season behind them after wins over Jarrow Roofing and Crook Town, manager Michael Connor included new signings Daniel Hislop, Mark Andrews, Lee Middleton, Colin Morton, Mark Fenwick and Paul Dunn in an attacking line-up in the hope of putting the game to bed early.

But it was not to be as from the eighth minute, striker Jasper, with the goal at his mercy, somehow managed to put the ball safely into the arms of the Whickham keeper.

This turned out to be the story of the afternoon with Fenwick hitting the bar, Robinson having a top corner effort somehow clawed away and Miller seeing a header cleared off the line.

The chances kept racking up in front of a large crowd, there were 16 in the first half alone, but if it had not been for the brilliance of Matty Crooks, Blyth could of been 1-0 down as he pulled off a point blank save to keep his goal intact.

The second half began with Blyth having a strong breeze behind them, but yet again chances went begging.

After 65 minutes Atkinson, Michael Fenwick and Zak Atkinson were all introduced, but chances again went astray.

But a great run by Hislop left Michael Fenwick with a one-on-one and the new signing did not let Blyth down with a great finish with little more than seven minutes remaining.

Man of the match for the home side was Daniel Hislop, and Blyth entertain Whitley Bay A on Saturday, August 15.
