Late goals give Ashington convincing win over Jarrow

Ashington secured their first friendly win of the pre-season with a 5-1 victory over Wearside League outfit Jarrow CW at Woodhorn Lane on Tuesday night.

It followed hard on the heels of the Colliers’ 1-1 draw with Scottish third division outfit Berwick Rangers at weekend.

However, whilst the scoreline points to an emphatic result, it was only three goals in the final stages which gave the home side their margin of victory in a contest which produced plenty of good football from both sides.

Glen Taylor fired the Wansbeck outfit ahead after only five minutes, clipping the ball from 16 yards over keeper Kyle Barnard.

The scorer had further opportunities whilst home stopper Craig Towart pushed over from Andy Wilkinson.

Ashington added a second in the 34th minute when David Carson headed home via the bar from a right wing cross.

Twelve minutes into the second period the visitors reduced the deficit when Wilkinson latched onto a through ball and fired past Towart.

In the 78th minute, substitute Phill Bell took a throw-in on the left and then finished off the move involving Sam Norris and Johnson, slotting wide of Barnard.

Five minutes from time, Lee Scott headed home from a Norris cross and after Johnson had struck the base of the post.

Scott added his second and Ashington’s fifth moments before the final whistle, stroking the ball home from close range.

Ashington: Towart, McGlen, C Scott, Atkin, Laws, Watson, J Taylor, Carson, G Taylor, Palmer. Subs: Norris, Johnson, Grieve, Briggs, L Scott, Bell.

On Saturday, the Colliers are at home to Coldstream with a 3pm kick-off.
