Late winner for Morpeth away to Shields

AN 88th minute goal from Steven Anderson secured three points for Morpeth Town when they travelled to North Shields on Friday night.

Morpeth took the lead on 49 minutes through Eddie Dines, but Keith Douglas converted a penalty after 63 minutes to bring the score level. In the closing minutes though Anderson took advantage of a defensive error and clinched the victory for the visitors.

After a late afternoon down pour North Shields kicked off on a slick playing surface at the Daren Persson Stadium.

In the first attack of any note Douglas broke down the left for North Shields and crossed to Hay who was foiled by a fine diving save by Hogg in the Morpeth goal.

After ten minutes Fry was fouled on the edge of the home penalty area.

Anderson bent the ball round the wall and Beal in the Shields goal did well to palm the ball away. With Hall, Dines and Fry controlling the mid field, Dines went down after a heavy challenge by Atkinson who was rightly booked, and McAlpine struck a firm shot just wide off the far post.

With Morpeth in the ascendancy Dormand intercepted a stray North Shields pass and played the ball into the path of Anderson. His powerful drive was tipped over the bar by the impressive Beal.

The North Shields defence were having great difficulty coping with Morpeth’s accurate passing and movement off the ball. Dormand linked up this time with McAlpine and his shot was diverted onto the cross bar by Beal. North Shields were fortunate to go in at the breatk still on level terms.

Morpeth continued to dominate play and took a fully deserved lead when Dines stopped and sent a fine diving header into the far corner of the net.

In a rare Shields attack Robinson slid in at the far post and was adjudged to have fouled Shields full back JD Hall. Hogg got a hand to Douglas’s penalty but could not prevent the equaliser.

Despite this set back Morpeth continued to be the more composed team and the winning goal that they richly deserved came two minutes from time.

Anderson rounded Beal and though forced wide slid the ball into the empty net from an acute angle to give Morpeth the three points.
