New signing Michael Laws is expected to make his Ashington debut at the start of the new season against Spennymoor, the club he left to link up with the Colliers.

And the 30-year-old defender or midfielder admitted at the weekend that he thought Woodhorn Lane’s assistant manager Perry Briggs was cracking a joke when he told him about the opening day fixture at the Brewery Field on August 10.

Laws, who only recently signed on the dotted line, said: “Coincidentally, I needed to speak to Perry on the same day that the fixtures were released and when he told me that Ashington were away to Spennymoor, I believed he was winding me up.

“It’s ironic to say the least, but I can honestly say that I am looking forward to it.

“As a player, you are always going to be fired up on the opening day of the campaign and will always be looking for your side to put on a performance whoever the opposition may be.

“No matter who you play, it will be a big game because it provides a different challenge with teams setting up in their own style against you.

“But as far as I’m concerned the Spennymoor game will be just another fixture and I will be treating it in the same way as any other.

“They are a good side – but I know how well Ashington did against them towards the end of last season when they earned a 0-0 draw, and I don’t see any reason why we can’t go there and get all three points.”
