Astley High School U19 boys’ football team have won the Subsidiary Cup.

It is their second success in recent weeks after being crowned U19s Northumberland Schools’ League division two for the second year running.

The Subsidiary Cup final against King Edward VI was played at Cochrane Park.

Astley were trailing 1-0 with ten minutes to go, but half-time substitute Kieran Brannen turned the game around and scored two goals in the closing stages.

His first came from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the box.

He followed this up with his second and winning goal with 90 seconds to go.

Teachers Mr Lamb and Mr Gilhooley provided inspirational management once again in steering the team to the league cup double.

Mrs Annette Rhodes, Head of School, said: “Fantastic football from our U19s yet again. Well done to the lads who showed commitment and unbeatable team spirit right until the end.

“Thank you to Mr Lamb and Mr Gilhooley for accompanying the team to the final.”
