IN one of the few games of the day to beat the frost, Northumberland’s top junior side met Durham’s top junior side in the Durham County Junior Cup quarter-final, with a semi-final visit away to Benfield Saints as the prize.
New Hartley have reached this final three times in the last four seasons but finished runners-up on each occasion.
It was Hartley who took the lead on the half hour when a great run down the right from Simon Gallan saw his cross turned in by Danny Young.
Only five minutes later Hartley made it 2-0 thanks to an own goal from Paul Johnson.
League leaders Chester-le-Street, though, never gave up, and after hitting the post they pulled one back through Callum Patton.
But despite late pressure from the Durham side, Hartley managed to hang on to book a semi-final place.
