Having lost 2-1 at league leaders Seaham in midweek, New Hartley Juniors bounced back in style on Saturday with a 5-2 win over Shildon to progress to the next round of the Durham FA County Cup.
Callum Johnston was the Hartley hero, bagging a hat-trick, and it was he that opened the scoring on 20 minutes with a fine solo effort.
They increased their lead ten minutes later through Jak Ditchburn before Harris Saunders pulled one back for the Railway Men to make it 2-1.
Hartley were awarded a free kick just outside the box and Johnston smashed it home to send the home side into the break with a 3-1 lead.
Lewis Xiberras extended Hartley’s lead to 4-1 but Shildon again pulled another back through Ryan Nelson.
With ten minutes to go Shildon were awarded a penalty only for it to be saved by Tom Craney.
Johnston completed his hat-trick in the last minute to send Hartley into the next round.
This Saturday sees Hartley in league action with an away trip to Brandon.
