New Hartley Juniors 3
Shildon Juniors 1
Durham County Youth League
After drawing 3-3 at Durham City in midweek, New Hartley Juniors got back to winning ways on Saturday with a 2-1 over Shildon, who had won their previous five games.
The game was played in horrendous conditions but both sides adapted well.
Hartley fielded a depleted side due to players on county duty with Northumberland but handed new signing John Watson a debut in which he was outstanding and was the man of the match.
Hartley went one up on 20 minutes when Joe Thelfall’s cross come shot eluded the Shildon keeper and ended up in the back of the net.
On the hour Hartley were reduced to ten men when Kris Sands was red carded.
Shildon hit the bar, had a goal disallowed and piled on the pressure, but Hartley broke away and Dan McGuire made it 2-0.
The Railway men did pull one back with five minutes remaining but Hartley managed to hold out to claim all three points.
