The former England left-back’s last Premier League appearances came whilst on loan at Steve Bruce’s side in 2020 after he was frozen out by Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.

Rose is searching for a new club following his release last week – and he’s been tipped for a St James’s Park return.

Phillips told Football Insider: “It wouldn’t surprise me if somebody like Newcastle offered him a year,

“I am sure he could still do a job and he will be fit enough I imagine. I think you could get a good couple of seasons out of him because he is not really that old.

“The only question is whether he still has that hunger and desire to play week in, week out in the Premier League. He needs to want to challenge himself again.

“I could see him going to a Newcastle or one of the clubs coming up from the Championship.

“He is still capable of playing in the Premier League though, 100 per cent.”

Federico Fernandez linked with Real Betis switch

Federico Fernandez is reportedly wanted by Real Betis as his Newcastle contract ticks into its final weeks.

There is still no clarification on the Argentine defender’s future but supporters hope he will stay put after an impressive three years on Tyneside.

If the 32-year-old is to be let go this summer, Spanish publication AS reports that Real Betis, managed by former Manchester City and West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini, are among the clubs keen to seal his signature.

Celtic enquire about Freddie Woodman – report

Celtic have enquired about Freddie Woodman’s availability during conversations about Kristoffer Ajer, according to one report.

A number of publications have reported Newcastle’s desire to sign Ajer and Football Insider claims The Hoops have asked about the highly-rated Woodman.

Apparently, Celtic have suggested a potential part-exchange deal but the Magpies would prefer to loan him out, rather than sell the 24-year-old.

Woodman, who is under contract until 2023, has spent the last two seasons at Championship side Swansea City.
