A double from Callum Roberts and a volley from Ryan Hutchinson had Lee Clark’s side cruising at half-time until an indescribable second-half unfolded.

Kettering unnerved the Spartans defence from two corners as Michael McGarth and Luke Graham bundled the ball home. But Roberts soon completed his hat-trick – running the full length of the field – to give the visitors a two-goal cushion at 2-4.

That should have killed the game off, but back came the hosts for an unlikely share of the points. Lindon Meikle made it 3-4 before substitute Dre Mitford levelled proceedings in the 90th-minute.

Spartans must now try and put the disappointment of that game behind them as they prepare for this Saturday’s home game against Alfreton Town in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

Spartans reached the last 16 of the competition in 2018-19 before losing 1-0 to eventual finalists Leyton Orient. On this occasion there is £3,750 up for grabs for the winners, with the losers receiving £1,250.

Blyth and Alfreton faced off in the second game of the league season with the Reds running out 3-0 winners against a Blyth side which has undergone a lot of change since then.

Clark is naturally hoping for an improved performance on that meeting, and after Saturday’s draw at Kettering will be looking for more concentration from his players.
