And although the forward was pleased to hit the goals trail, he thought the most important aspect was the three points.

“I was happy to get back amongst the goals,” he said.

“But as a team, it was crucial that we got the win.”

The 24-year-old described his brace of goals: “For the first it was sheer luck how the ball bounced over me.

“I then lifted it over the defender and drove into the bottom corner.

“For the second, I brought the ball down on my chest, spun the defender and smashed it into the far corner.

“I enjoyed both goals and was delighted that I got the winner because I wanted to make an impression and show what I could do.”

Stevens is adamant that there is more to come from the squad.

“It’s onwards and upwards from here,” he said.

“Hopefully we can start picking up more points and move up the table because where we are at the moment doesn’t do us any justice, and we are a lot better than our league placing suggests.

“People are writing us off but there is a lot more to come from us.”

Manager Steve Harmison said: “There were reasons why Damien Stevens didn’t start, but he has come off the bench with a point to prove and rightly so.

“We basically told him to go on and win the game for us; he owed the lads something and he gave them it.

“We all know what he can do, he’s very fiery, raw and pacy. We have got to get him to do it in a way like tonight where he is channelling his energy in the right direction and when he does that, he’s virtually unplayable.

“He scored two excellent goals and it came from their back four or five being tired.

“Damien can score many more for us. We all think the world of him and we want the best for him, and the little bit of X factor he has got will take us a long way.”
