The pair featured prominently last season for the Woodhorn Lane club and had no hesitation in putting pen to paper.

Wideopen-born Briggs has made no secret of the fact that he is not a fan of pre season training – but the 25 year old is prepared to put his bugbear to one side: “I’m buzzing and raring to go,” he said, “I had a couple of offers from other clubs but I liked what manager Ian Skinner and chairman Brian Shotton had to say about plans for the club and it was an easy decision.

"We started well last year in a season which was curtailed but hopefully we will get a full campaign this time round.”

20 year old Emmerson said: “It’s a pleasure to play for Ashington and it was always my intention to sign on again.

"The lads at the club have made it apparent that they want me so I’m more than happy to stay. It’s been frustrating not being able to play and I can’t wait for next season to come round.”

Ashington manager Ian Skinner said: “We are pleased as a club that Dean and Max wanted to stay with us. Although we only played a dozen games last season, the pair were important players for us with Dean scoring important goals and Max doing well in front of the back four.

"They were two players that we were keen to tie up as soon as possible.”
