An under-strength Ashington Woodhorn Lane Ladies side went down 3-1 at home against Whitley Bay Development in their opening league game of the season.
Missing six regulars, there were good performances by 16-year-old Chloe Crook and Jodi Wright making their league debuts.
Lauren Townsend had cracked home a free kick to put Ashington ahead but the visitors equalised on the stroke of half-time.
Both teams had chances in the second half and Ashington keeper Nikita Johnstone made three superb saves to deny the visitors.
But Whitley Bay grabbed two late goals to win the curtain raiser. Next Sunday Ashington Ladies are at Carlisle-based Crown Newlaithes.
