Ashington Woodhorn Ladies were beaten 4-3 by visitors Gateshead Rutherford in a pre-season friendly.

Michelle Wright put Gateshead in front with a fine shot after quarter of an hour, and five minutes later Vicky Freeman added a second.

Following a heavy spell of pressure, Rebecca Caldow reduced the deficit and Ashington began the second half on the attack with Laura Jobson levelling with a cracking drive from 20 yards.

Five minutes later, Laura Fairley fired an unstoppable shot from 30 yards which cannoned off the upright and into the net to put the hosts ahead 3-2.

Chances were carved out at both ends before the visitors equalised with a scrambled goal through Nicola Drinkall.

Seven minutes from the end Gateshead stole victory when the home defence failed to clear and Rachel Smailes prodded home.
