At its recent AGM, Ashington Rugby Club appointed Albert Armstrong as its new president.
Armstrong takes over from retiring president Gordon Conway, who has stood down after a successful three-year stint.
The club also announced the selection of Gareth Newman as its club captain.
He is the son of long-standing club treasurer and former player Garry (Spike) Newman.
Ashington Rugby Club’s season kicks-off with a home game against Whitley Bay Rockcliff on Saturday, September 5.
And the club’s members are looking forward to the Rugby World Cup which runs for six weeks during September and October.
To celebrate the World Cup, the club have a series of events lined up to make the most of the festivities.
In particular, for none rugby followers who want to enjoy the competition, there is a special event being held at the rugby club on Friday, September 4, with an 8pm start.
Rugby Laws made easy, will be presented by Dave Pearson, a former World Cup and international referee, and local lad.
This will be followed by a question and answer session with Pearson and a sports quiz. All are welcome.
Other events are a women’s rugby taster session on Sunday, September 6, at 10am.
On Sunday, September 13, at 10am, there will be a girls’ rugby taster session.
A World Cup kick-off night is being held on Friday, September 18, and further events are being held over the course of the competition.
