American football team Lightning looking to grow

THE Northumberland Lightning American football team has a new home at Ashington Rugby Club.

And they are now looking to up the recruitment drive for more players and coaches.

The club has grown from an original group of 12 to around 40 in just four months.

Lightning are recruiting for the senior team (over 19), youth and junior teams (under 19) and are also putting together a women’s team, with the aim to have a full women’s flag team up and running by the end of the summer.

Newly elected club chairman Stuart Dick said: “The rapid growth of the club has been outstanding.

“I originally set up the club with the aim of training by the end of 2013, but with so much interest we began training in late 2012, a month after the club was founded.

“Last week we appointed our inaugural committee at our first annual general meeting, and we have big plans for the club.

“But to continue our progress we need more players, coaches and helpers, anyone is welcome at the Lightning and will be greeted by a nice bunch of people.”

The club has recently been accepted by the British American Football Association National Leagues as a development team.

They are looking to play some games towards the end of 2013, with an aim to become an associate member of the league in 2014 before becoming a full member in 2015.

Training takes place on Sundays between 9am and 1pm.
