THE sixth and final race of Blyth Running Club’s Summer Cup series saw 49 runners take part along the promenade and coastal path.

Unfortunately Heather Barrass had to drop out through injury, leaving 48 finishers.

With a strong northerly wind blowing, it meant that the final mile was into the wind and this affected times as only five runners set their fastest times.

The wind did not seem to affect Anne Craddock who took the lead with a mile to go and was never passed, beating Peter Maylia by 12 seconds with Angela Johnson a further 15 seconds adrift in third.

Officials were kept busy as 38 runners finished within one minute of each other.

The fastest time on the night was set by Robbie Barkley, while junior Charlie Hedley set the fastest time by a lady.

The final positions in the league were extremely close as Jon French beat Mark Ponton by one point, with Richard Shillinglaw in third a further four points back.

The team event saw a win for ‘R n R’ – Ron Ingram, Davina Lonsdale, Richard Shillinglaw, Ian Baxter, Heather Christopher and Steve Gillespie – with a total of 107 points thanks to one win, two seconds, two thirds and a fourth.

In second place, on 87 points, were ‘French and Saunterers’, who came on a late charge with wins in the last two races; and in third with 77 points were ‘Charlies Angels’.

The next race for club members is the Club Annual Relays, full details are on the club’s website and noticeboard.
