A CYCLING club has been given a boost thanks to support from a Newcastle business.

The Barnesbury CC has secured support from Start Cycles to help continue the club’s youth development, building on their activity in Bedlington’s Gallagher Park.

Originally formed in 1923 in Newcastle the club moved the youth coaching sessions to Gallagher Park last year to complement the time trial series it runs at Cramlington on a Wednesday evening, supporting at the same time the efforts in developing activity in the park.

Over the last 12 months the club has grown steadily and the support from Start Cycles aims to continue that, allowing riders new to cycling to development onto yet another level.

Stephen McIntosh, from the club, said: “This will not only give members substantial discount on purchases, but it will link the club with one of the fastest growing cycling retailers in the region.”

Mark Hetherington, from Start Cycles, said: “We want to support grassroots activity, developing new and existing riders within community cycling clubs.

“If we can help make the Barnesbury more successful in developing riders’ potential I feel proud to be linked with that achievement which could eventually lead to unearthing a future champion.”

Events are planned for throughout August which will see a cyclo-cross race and a grass track event take scheduled in the park for the very first time – enabling youngsters to experience the Olympic disciplines locally.

With support from British Cycling, Start Cycles and West Bedlington Parish Council the race/coaching series has a good range of prizes for those taking part.

Entry costs £3 per event and parental consent is required at each date.
