In a team lacking confidence and aggression, Ashington started Saturday’s game at Seaton Carew with two 18-year-olds in the tight five, and finished with two 50-year-olds.
With such selection problems it is hard to criticise some of the players, however, some merely went through the motions.
Players who did give 100 per cent were Connor Nichol, Johnny Arkle, James Jones, Jack Rutherford, Lewis Henderson, Nathan and Cory Whitworth and half-time replacement Shaun Nichol, whose strong run at the start of the second half led to a try for Johnson.
Ashington’s other score came from a well taken try in the corner by centre James Jones.
It is hard to believe that this is the same side that dug in for a hard fought victory against Wallsend just before Christmas.
If the team is to avoid relegation the players need to train together over the coming few weeks.
