Ashington RFC 39-15 Newton Aycliffe

Ash powered to a six try victory with this excellent team performance.

McKay struck an early penalty to give the home side a 3-0 lead, despite the loss of influential number 8 Johnson through injury during the first play of the game.

After 20 minutes Ash extended their lead when an excellent break and grubber kick through by Jarvis was latched onto by McKay who outpaced the covering defence to score the home sides first try.

Ash continued to dominate during this period with Tuck, Beattie,Rutherford, Arkle and Whatmore all featuring strongly. Center Nathan Whitworth extended Ashingtons lead, taking a perfectly timed pass from a Johnny Storey clean break, McKay adding the conversion to give the home side a deserved 15-0 lead.

Newton Aycliffe scored their first converted try after 35 minutes and then had a spell of pressure adding their second try just before half time to give a 15-12 halt time score.

Aycliffe started the second half strongly and only a good tackle from Moffat 5 metres out prevented a visitor try. The visitors did draw level with a penalty after 9 minutes of the second half. Ash then dominated the final 30 minutes running in 4 excellent tries, McKay converting two.

A great run by Tuck set up an attacking ruck which saw Storey ghost through the gap to score the first of his two tries.

Man of the match Scott Whatmore extended Ashingtons lead with a 30m sprint from a ruck to score in the corner. Storey scored his second, again spotting the gap and powering through to score near the posts. Gareth Newman crossed from close range with the final play of the game after a barnstorming Nathan Whitworth run.
